IKEA Jerker Desk

IKEA Jerker Desk

There are rave reviews about how sturdy the IKEA jerker desk is, and the pictures I’ve seen all show that it is a highly functional desk with these awesome swing out side shelves that make it appear to be expandable. If you live in an area with an IKEA nearby, you may be able to find your very own IKEA jerker desk used on craigslist – but you better be quick about responding, these “jerkers” appear to get picked up rather fast by fans – new and old alike.

I began wondering what’s so great about these anyway, and as far as I can tell, they take up very little space, while giving you lots of space to keep the clutter picked up. I even found pictures for one that had been modified (the top had been cut out in the center, so we’re talking a pretty serious modification) so that it was a treadmill workstation. That’s right, a computer mounted over the top of the controls of the treadmill, in an office, so the employees could walk and work. I couldn’t help but think of how great that would be in my bedroom – to not have my big clunky desk (that I happen to love) and my treadmill in the corner – to combine the two. I bet I’d even walk more – if I had to walk/stand on the treadmill to use the computer – which I do a lot given that I run two home based businesses.

I have continued to search out this elusive IKEA jerker desk, and found that they work great for apartments, college dorms, and small home offices. People who have one jerker desk seem to think they have to have another, and spend time watching for them online. The people that have the most success finding them are, of course, the ones that live nearest to an IKEA (because of course, there is a lot more IKEA furniture in the area being sold used). People that become obsessed with the IKEA jerker desk will buy multiples of them when they find them used – just to save them, just in case they ever need another one.

So is the IKEA jerker desk just another computer desk, or is there something truly magical about it? And why, with such a following, did IKEA choose to discontinue this beloved computer desk? Since I don’t often (or ever) dine with anybody that works at IKEA, I don’t know why they discontinued it. I do know, however, that with a following like the IKEA jerker desk has, it’s probably a desk you can’t go wrong with to purchase. I think I’ll start watching the local classifieds and see if I can come up with one of these elusive IKEA jerker desks. Unfortunately, I don’t live all that close to an IKEA, so chances are I will come up empty handed, but for a discontinued product to have such a following, I am curious. Do you own an IKEA jerker desk? Do you love or hate your IKEA jerker desk?
